The Time Bum on the Hampden Model 1: Sullivan — A Watch for Every Occasion
When The Time Bum sat down to review our flagship Model 1: Sullivan, they didn’t just see a timepiece — they saw a watch that bridges worlds: between collector-level craftsmanship and everyday wearability, between a century of heritage and patented modern innovation.
“The Hampden Model 1 resides happily in that in-between space… a watch with a patented innovation, from a brand with just over a century of watchmaking history, and constructed by an enthusiast darling (Marathon).”
Design that Evokes Chicago’s Golden Age
Reviewer Matt Kessler-Cleary singled out the Sullivan’s dial as a standout feature, praising the Art Deco–inspired numerals, deep blue skeletonized hands, and parchment-colored matte finish that “evoke the texture and hue of high-quality paper.” Every element — from the subtle shadows cast by the raised numerals to the harmonious complication placement — was noted for its thoughtful execution.
“The numerals… are striking in their detail, as they are sharply lined and raised… The dial is classically pretty, and the detailed elements are finely wrought.”
Built for Comfort, Finished for Luxury
From its onion crown to the polished and brushed surfaces, the Sullivan’s case was recognized for its quality finishing and early-20th-century design nods. The Time Bum also praised the included strap and bracelet options, calling the hybrid leather-and-rubber strap “exceptionally comfortable” and the 3-link bracelet “charming” in its vintage lightness.
The Casecap — Personalization Without Compromise
Perhaps the feature that drew the most admiration was our patented interchangeable Casecap™ system. The Time Bum emphasized how it allows owners to personalize a watch without permanently altering it — engraving a second cap for a special occasion while preserving the exhibition back for everyday enjoyment.
“The casecap system and design potential are a core aspect of the Model 1’s ethos… One could collect casecaps over time to mark different occasions, or simply for different design motifs.”
An Experience Beyond the Watch
Even the packaging impressed — a “sizable, beautiful wooden box” with compartments for straps, tools, and the second Casecap, creating what the reviewer described as “a luxurious experience” that enhances the watch’s sense of occasion.
Looking Ahead
For those who love the Sullivan’s design but prefer smaller proportions, The Time Bum revealed an exciting development: a 37mm Model 1 is in the works for Fall 2025.
In their final assessment, the review called the 42mm Model 1 “a high-quality and appealing package,” particularly for those drawn to its story-driven, celebratory nature.
